Grand Designs: Built to Last: Horseshoe Hill on Grand Designs Australia

In a standout episode of Grand Designs Australia, viewers are taken to the Sunshine Coast hinterland to follow the creation of Horseshoe Hill

Set on a steep rural site near Maleny, the home was designed by Joe Adsett Architects for Gary and Lorilie Cunningham, who sought to create a multigenerational retreat that celebrated family, landscape and life itself.

The home’s defining horseshoe form wraps around a central courtyard and pool, drawing light, views and landscape into the heart of the residence.

Raw concrete structure is balanced with timber, stone and expansive glazing, creating a house that feels both monumental and deeply liveable.

Internally, the layout separates private and communal zones while maintaining strong visual and spatial connection throughout.

As with many Grand Designs projects, the scale and complexity of the build tested both budget and resolve.

Yet the finished home stands as a triumph — a sculptural response to site and story, and a clear expression of architecture as a vessel for memory, resilience and future living.
